To start you must first connect the sensor and wait until the red light is on. As soon as this goes out, the sensor is ready for operation. In order for the sensor to calibrate itself, you must ventilate your room thoroughly. The fresher your air is, the more accurate the sensor measures. The measuring principle is based on the relative differences to the calibrated values.
